Fishing in Wanaka
Wanaka is a township which lies on the shores of the lake with the same name.
It has a population of around 6000 people although this number swells through the winter ski season and through the Christmas New Year holiday period.
The town itself has a magnificent backdrop, overlooking the deep snow fed lake and out towards Mt Aspiring National Park and the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
It offers a multitude of excellent restaurants, bars and accommodation to suit your budget as well as local wineries, golf courses, 100’s of kilometres of biking and walking trails and numerous tourist activities and of course the many and varied trout fishing opportunities.
It is 1 hours drive from Queenstown which has direct flights to Australia and links to other New Zealand cities.
The area has two large clear glacial lakes in Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea and a smaller shallower Lake Dunstan. The large volume gin clear Clutha river which drains the lakes as well as many snow fed mountain rivers and streams which are to numerous to mention.
1 to 1 1/2 hours drive to the South , West , East or North will get you into the Southland, West Coast , Central Otago or Central South Island districts respectively.
